Our Home
In June 2007 the already world famous Rideau Canal was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site (whc.unesco.org) and you can see it by stepping out our front door!.
The Rideau Canal has been ranked by National Geographic Magazine, as the world's #2 most Sustainable Historic Destination in the world, (traveler.nationalgeographic.com)
We are the only B&B in Ottawa on the Rideau Canal.
WELCOME!
In 1999 we found this beautiful “English Cottage” home
in old Ottawa South and enhanced its 1925 beauty with mirth, colour and conveniences.
Here's our story and what we offer you, our invited guests.
Explorer Roses, developed by our regional experimental agricultural farm, and planted according to my mother's design, fill our front garden to either side of the massive oak door and welcome guests to their private entrance to the house.
The Hand of Fatima door knocker is reportedly modeled on the first known “door bell”.
There are over 30 leaded glass windows on the ground floor of this Estate home, all surrounded by gleaming oak and fitted with restored brass hardware.
Off street parking is available and Ottawa's Official Ceremonial route, the Colonel By Drive, and The Rideau Canal are two dozen steps from our front door.
Some Local History
The Rideau Canal was built in the 1830's, under the leadership of Colonel John By, as a military waterway to Kingston and Lake Ontario. Its only use has been commercial and recreational. The area to the north and east of our location was named “The Notch in the Mountains” by the Canal Engineers and Surveyors. Remnants of the mountain are still visible.
Our home was built in 1925 by Mr. Frank Jones, manager of The Ottawa Dairy, 14 years after the first permanent bridge was built across The Canal at Bank Street (replacing a wooden bridge). The land originally extended another 100' west on Colonel By Drive, where the Caplans(owners of the Caplan Department store chain}built two homes for family members in 1947.
Enjoy your stay in Ottawa wherever you unpack your bags.

Michelin's “The Green Guide”, Canada
“This red-brick abode in a quiet, tree-filled neighbourhood is only steps away from the Rideau Canal (ice-skating in winter, biking in summer). There's a private entrance for guests, and tea, coffee and hot chocolate are available around the clock in the lounge. Guests even have the option of breakfast served in bed. Two airy rooms overlook the canal; the third is shaded by a century-old oak tree”.
